On occasion of his participation in the World Hydrogen Summit, Marcos Kulka, CEO of H2 Chile, shares some of his views on the industry.
The World Hydrogen Summit took place on May 20, 21 and 22 of this year. It was attended by a Chilean delegation composed of more than 60 decision makers, experts and government officials linked to the green hydrogen industry in Chile.
Marcos Kulka, executive director of H2 Chile, was one of its members. Recently, he made a balance of what was the Summit and the state of the hydrogen and green ammonia ecosystem in the country. “Conviction, better enabling variables and more robust projects” are the main factors that Kulka highlighted in his text regarding Chile’s potential for the development of this industry.
Kulka raised the need to advance certification in the target markets, which will allow developers to better design their plants; connect to the grid; use low amounts of gas to stabilize energy requirements; and use batteries or hydrogen itself for storage.
He also noted that Chile has moved from confusion over not reaching last year’s exorbitant high targets “to a healthy realism where projects that have demand incentives, early financing subsidies, critical infrastructure and clear regulation are moving forward”.
Regarding the state of the industry, Kulka stated that “the refining process or ammonia production will be the first to be replaced and of commercial scale, given that they already have a market”. He pointed to China as the industry leader, with almost half of the electrolysis production capacity, and praised the initiative of Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands in the construction of enabling pipelines.
Finally, the executive director of H2 Chile pointed out that it requires the entry of new financial actors, subsidies to the supply of green hydrogen and to be involved in advanced projects “at preferential prices, with high expected returns”.
