In 2020, Chile’s Ministry of Energy launched the National Green Hydrogen Strategy (H2) with a long-term roadmap. This strategy outlined the goals and timeline for local H2 production, installed electrolysis capacity, and associated investments, with the expectation that domestic applications of green hydrogen would foster an industry ready to compete in international export markets.
Chile’s potential is clear. The country’s abundance of renewable resources—particularly solar in the north and wind in the south—enables low-cost green hydrogen production using clean electricity. Its long coastline also provides access to water for the electrolysis process and allows for the development of ports to export this energy. Finally, Chile’s experience in the energy and mining industries, combined with its existing logistics infrastructure, creates favorable conditions for the development of this energy sector.

To date, more than 40 projects have been established in Chile. In May 2022, a committee for the Productive Development of the Green Hydrogen Industry was created, led by the Ministry of Energy. This committee coordinates with key stakeholders and public policy initiatives to promote opportunities within the industry. Today, it is a fact that investment in green hydrogen will lead to significant national capabilities and the creation of dynamic economic ecosystems throughout the country.
