In the competitive electromobility market, dominated by Asian giants, Reborn Electric Motors (REM) has developed a proposal that goes a step beyond electric vehicles: hydrogen buses designed, manufactured, and validated in Chile, adhering to the same robust standards the company established in the mining sector. The company has a Hydrogen Laboratory inaugurated at its Rancagua factory, from where it has spearheaded the development of the first fully Chilean-made hydrogen bus.
The startup now plays a key role in the hydrogen transportation applications industry. After manufacturing the first prototype bus with technical precision, driving mechanical engineering and development through its team of professionals, they are now in charge of manufacturing a new model. In June, at Reborn’s facilities, the completion of its assembly phase in Chile was announced, paving the way for the next technical and regulatory challenges toward its validation and certification. This vehicle is destined to be tested on Santiago’s Red System, the capital’s public transportation network.
In addition, it maintains a fleet of brand-new buses: the Queltehue (24 passengers) and the Tricahue (44 passengers). This fleet has already traveled more than 12 million kilometers, operating under conditions of snow, mud, and challenging slopes. Thanks to this, a reduction of 3,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year has been achieved, directly impacting the occupational health of mine workers.
The key to its success against foreign competition lies in its technical sovereignty. While global manufacturers offer standardized products, REM buses incorporate designs adapted to regional conditions, local availability of spare parts, and after-sales service from day one. Located in the heart of the mining region, the company guarantees operational continuity and genuine technology transfer through ongoing training for drivers and mechanics.
With a production capacity of 200 buses per year, specialists in vehicles powered by hydrogen as a sustainable fuel, a strategic alliance with the manufacturer Marcopolo and projections of expansion towards mining in the north and the Brazilian market, Reborn demonstrates that proximity and technical specialization are the most powerful tools to lead the decarbonization of heavy industry from Chile.
