The international competition for scale model cars powered by green hydrogen will bring together technical high schools from all over Chile in Metropolitan Santiago, connecting the education of the future with the development of the region’s energy ecosystem.
The design of Chile’s energy future is also being piloted at full speed on a racetrack. From September 1st to 3rd, the Metropolitan Santiago Convention Center will host a new edition of Hyvolution Chile, the most important event for green hydrogen and clean energy in the region. A key part of the fair is the Hydrogen Grand Prix, H2GP, which will solidify its presence for the third consecutive year as one of the most anticipated and exciting highlights of the program.
Created globally by Horizon Educational and based on the STEAM teaching methodology, which integrates science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics, this competition brings together high school students to design, build, and pilot radio-controlled vehicles powered exclusively by green hydrogen fuel cells. With a presence in more than 20 countries and an international circuit whose grand final takes place in California, the competition finds a fundamental driving force in Chile through the implementation of the SOFOFA Educational Corporation, along with the support of the Ministry of Energy, H2 Chile, and Colbún.
The 2026 edition will bring together delegations from technical and vocational high schools from across the country. For the participating teams, the event represents the culmination of months of classroom and workshop training, where they will test not only their speed on the track, but also their fuel efficiency, pit stop strategy, and ability to resolve unexpected mechanical issues in real time under the most demanding conditions.
This year, the action kicks off on Tuesday, September 1st, with accreditation and track access, followed by a rigorous technical inspection led by Horizon Educational judges and specialists in the field. Each vehicle will be evaluated, and the lap counter will be installed before the official opening. That same afternoon, the tension shifts from the track to the judging panels, as teams present their projects in the Colbún Energy Efficiency Competition before a panel of judges from the public, private, and academic sectors.
The adrenaline reaches its peak on Wednesday, September 2nd, with the start of the H2GP Chile 2026 National Race, an intense four-hour continuous test where endurance, energy management strategy, and driving precision will determine the champion team. The sporting and technological celebration concludes on Thursday the 3rd with the Girls STEAM competition, a race designed to highlight and promote female leadership in engineering and the energy of tomorrow, culminating in the grand awards ceremony.
The H2GP aims to highlight the crucial role of technical training and hands-on learning in the energy transition. Regarding the impact of this initiative, FISA’s General Manager, Carola Fuentes, emphasizes the importance of bringing these technologies into the classroom from a concrete perspective: “This competition represents a great opportunity for young people to engage with innovation and the use of green hydrogen, fostering creativity in a key area for the future.
