EDF is the French state-owned company, world leader in clean energy. With operations in more than 20 countries, EDF is involved in the entire value chain: generation, transmission, distribution, marketing and various services. With an installed generation capacity of 117 GW and an annual production of around 467 TWh, more than 90% of the energy generated by EDF does not emit carbon emissions, whether it is nuclear, hydroelectric, wind or solar. This is in line with the company’s commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 at the latest through electricity and innovative solutions, to contribute to the fight against the climate crisis and to promote well-being and economic development. In Chile, EDF has been focused on collaborating with the country’s energy transition since 2014. In terms of electricity generation, EDF already has around 1.4 GW of installed capacity, and currently, in addition to developing new renewable generation projects, it is developing innovative technologies that allow the national electricity system to be more flexible, in order to take better advantage of the country’s renewable potential and help it move towards its goal of carbon neutrality. Thus, based on its international experience, the EDF Group is promoting energy storage projects, both short-term (BESS) and long-term storage projects, and developing green hydrogen projects. In July 2024, through its subsidiary Generadora Metropolitana, EDF inaugurated CEME 1, the largest solar plant in the country with an installed capacity of 480 MW, a project that also includes the development of a 1.7 GWh battery system. In relation to green hydrogen, in the context of the EDF Group’s ambitious plan to develop 3 GW of electrolysis capacity worldwide, the company has identified Chile as one of the priority countries for the development of projects, with special focus on Magallanes. There, EDF is developing a strategy that considers two projects, through which it expects to promote the production of green hydrogen in an efficient and sustainable way with the environment and communities. With the support and experience of a world-class engineering department, its research and development areas and subsidiaries specialized in hydrogen issues, such as Hynamics and McPhy, EDF is well positioned to lead in Chile the development of a complex industry such as green hydrogen through projects that meet the highest technical, environmental and social standards.
